Penguins deal Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes

June 22, 2012 will be a day that Jordan Staal will never forget. Not only did he get married, but he was also traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, from the Penguins, to play with his older brother Eric. Staal has been a third line center with the Penguins for the past few seasons mainly because of the presence of Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby ahead of him on the Pens depth chart. Staal finished last season with 25 goals and 25 assists in 62 games for Pittsburgh and scored six goals and three assists in six postseason games.

It’s news that Penguins fans have been waiting for since January. Sidney Crosby was cleared for contact today, and resumed full scale practice with his team, the next step in his comeback from his concussion. Crosby skated on a line with his regular wing Chris Kunitz, and last year’s trade deadline pick up James Neal.

In news that is music to the ears of all Pittsburgh Penguins fans, and causing Flyer and Capitals fans to curse, Sidney Crosby announced today with his doctors by his side that he will indeed be back to play in the NHL this season. This seemed like an impossible scenario just as little as a few weeks ago as many had reported that Sidney was thinking of retirement.

The question on every Penguins fan mind right now is will Sidney Crosby be ready to start the season. Over the last few weeks, GM Ray Shero has had to answer countless questions coming from Internet speculation as to whether his captain will be ready by the start of training camp. And really nobody can blame Sidney if he isn't ready to start the season based on some of the tragic events that have hit the NHL this offseason.

Moving Forward, Minus the Drama

After Jaromir Jagr spurned the Penguins offer and signed with cross state rival Philadelphia, GM Ray Shero immediately went to his original plan of adding a gritty winger. Enter Steve Sullivan, who has ties with Shero linking back to their time together in Nashville. Shero got the man he wanted all along for a friendly cap hit of 1.5 million on a one year deal. Shero also locked up three of his own free agents with deals to bring back Aaron Asham for one year, and Tyler Kennedy and Pascal Dupuis on two year deals. There is still concern about lack of scoring punch from players that aren’t named Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but the team will not lack of character, something that could not have been said by adding Jagr and the circus that comes with him.
