Flyers Invite Michael Nylander to Training Camp

Today, the Flyers announced that they have invited former Capitals center Michael Nylander to training camp on a tryout contract. Nylander, who turns 39 on October 3rd, has played with Jaromir Jagr twice in the past.

Nylander and Jagr played very well together during their time together as parts of both the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals, and that seems to be the reason that Paul Holmgren extended this offer to Michael. Via Tim Panaccio's twitter, @tpanotchCSN, "#flyer GM Paul Holmgren confirms he's hoping Nylander-Jagr get the magic back ... Nylander coming off spinal injury". The "spinal injury" that Panaccio was referring to was a broken neck suffered in a late October game against the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.

Last year, the Flyers extended the same sort of contract to Bill Guerin. Guerin did not impress anyone, including myself, during training camp and as a result, he was sent packing. Guerin then retired and became a part of the Penguins player development team. Holmgren will see if Nylander will stick on the roster and Nylander seems to be ready to give the NHL one more go, giving the Flyers just one more option at center. Nylander is a possiblity for a third line center with Jagr and some other winger, but we won't know anything about that until training camp.
